Aleks Pluskowski is Professor of Medieval Archaeology at the University of Reading, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Higher Education Academy, a Committee Member of the Medieval European Research Community (MERC) and a Board Member of the Historische Kommission für ost- und westpreußische Landesforschung.
He has written and edited 10 books, published over 80 articles, regularly presents at international conferences and has given lectures in 18 countries. This has included invited talks at world-leading institutions, including the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Stanford and Harvard, as well as the Royal Historical Society and the Vatican Museums.
From 2021-2024 he was the Editor of Medieval Archaeology, the leading international peer-reviewed journal on the subject. He is currently on the editorial committee of the journals Crusades and Pruthenia, and also a reviewer for UNESCO, National Geographic, the European Research Council and various journals and national funding bodies.
He has raised millions to fund archaeological research and has been involved in excavations across Europe, including the UK, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Italy, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Spain. He has also excavated in Morocco, Israel and Mauritius.
He obtained a First and MA Cantab in Archaeology & Anthropology at Christ’s College, Cambridge, a PhD in Archaeology from Gonville & Caius’ College and held a Junior Research Fellowship at Clare College. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Tartu for his services to Estonian archaeology, an International Visitor Fellowship at Stanford University and the Lansdowne Fellowship at the University of Victoria.
He lives in northwest London with his partner Melissa and their cat Jack.
